If you follow me on Instagram, you'll have seen that last weekend I (easy)jetted off to Edinburgh with Lily in honour of Hannah's birthday! It was my first trip to Scotland, so I was really excited to explore the culture, sights and sounds of the city- as well as visit some Edinburgh icons in the shape of the zoo and the castle. Whilst my first foray into all things Scottish threw up some unexpected surprises (I like black pudding!!), there was one element of the trip which was reassuringly familiar- the abundance of tartan on display across the city. There's no doubt that tartans, checks and plaid prints are big news for this season, with high street shops talking their autumn design cues from the ultra-covetable collections of Stella McCartney and Celine. Whilst it can be quite an intimidating statement to carry off, I've put together an edit of some of my favourite Scotch inspired pieces for an accessible take on the trend:
Pale Check V Front Coat, £89, Topshop/Checked Top with Zips, £39.99, Zara/Pink Reversible Tartan Blanket Scarf, £25, River Island/ Check Blouse with Contrast Collar, £tbc, ASOS/Pointed Toe Boots, £45, Marks & Spencer/NARS Nail Polish in Fury, £14.50, ASOS/Cashmere Hat, £29, COS.
This coat from Topshop is the stuff which winter wardrobe dreams are made of.Whilst the laundry bag print might prove slightly intimidating at first glance, teaming it with simple block colour basics is a sure-fire route to success. Picking out the accent colours from the print is also a really lovely way to create a seamless look- so take your cue from sky blues and crisp white hues and you're there. We all know that the world and his wife have been singing the praises of Zara's new season drop, and this check top is a definite favourite of mine. A tad more understated than traditional tartan, the graphic print and contrasting colourway still evoke a heritage feel, with the zips lending an ultra-cool, modern feel. For me, tartan scarves are synonymous with winter dressing, and this one from River Island is a really refreshing alternative to a lot of the darker hues which tend to dominate the shops at this time of the year- perfect for nodding to this season's penchant for pink too!
This blouse from ASOS also ticks a lot of trendy boxes, with the contrasting collar making it ideal for layering under a chunky knit as the weather gets chillier. Investing in a good pair of boots is a winter must for me, and this pair from Marks and Spencer are firmly on my wishlist after I spied them in store over the weekend. They're a really bold alternative to the traditional black and brown boots which tend to be my staples at this time of the year, and the buckle details add a really high-end feel. Although pink is the runaway favourite colour of the season, I've found myself rather drawn to purple of late too- and this heather inspired nail varnish from NARS is a lovely moody outfit accent- and perfect for tapping into a gothic aesthetic with Halloween just around the corner. Finally, finishing on a practical note, this cashmere hat from COS is a real winter essential and the ideal basic for incorporating into any new season wardrobe.
